Tribe: Amagheya (Ah-mah-gee-yah)
Philosophy: The Amagheyans view all life as sacred, imbued with the spirits of the gods and their ancestors. Murder, sport-hunting, and warfare are considered abhorrent among the tribe members. They greatly value the natural world and, for that which they take, they ensure they give back: the sick and elderly are known to ‘give’ themselves to the wildlife by venturing out on a Final Walk, and all parts of slain creatures are utilized. Death inside the village is rare because of their beliefs, and those who do pass on within the village are given an honorable ceremony before their body is sent into the ocean, weighted by stones, so that it may sink to the Great Depths for their water god to consume.
Despite their deeply spiritual beliefs, they also value knowledge, and make recordings and drawings of every creature they encounter, whether on land or in the ocean. All children are instructed how to survive and thrive in their watery environment and on land, albeit their skills are land are not as great as neighboring land-based tribes. Navigators, explorers, and map makers are viewed as heroes, which has led the tribe to become one of the leading tribes in navigation and discovery.
Relationships with other tribes are amicable, as they would rather trade than fight. Their allies view them as valuable friends for their wealth of pearls, salt, oil, and the maps and ocean travel protection they provide. Still, when pressed into fighting, the Amagheya can be fierce foes – especially on the water. Their boats and aquatic pets can easily cut off another tribe’s trade route and drive them back on land.
Gods: Polytheistic. All beasts are considered to be sacred, and each one has at least one spirit of an ancestor attached to them. Praying over their meals is mandatory, to thank the ancestors for bringing them the nourishment they require to live. Special ceremonies are performed every week to pray to the water god and the ancestors to bless their fishing grounds.
The Amagheyans worship gods of the air, earth, fire, and water, with water being the greatest of them all. The water god, Unega’ia, is said to be a massive sea creature, larger than even the largest mosasaur ever recorded (imagine an aquatic creature the size of the bones from SE). It is genderfluid, becoming male when the sea rages and female when the ocean provides bounty, and it is said that its skin glows a brilliant white, even in the darkened depths of the ocean.
A hallucinogenic oil from a rare fish is considered sacred, and used for young men and women coming of age in a ceremony. They take the oil on a raft, float to sea, and wait until their ancestors send to them their patron spirit (air, earth, wind, or water). When they return, they are tattooed on the forehead with their respective spirit symbol, indicating they have become a man or woman.
Government: The tribe is overseen by their elders and their Shaman, all of whom are revered as being wise spiritual leaders as well as knowledgeable in survival and life. Currently their Shaman is Aalma, an elderly woman whom has lead their tribe for many years through prosperity and famine. Her wisdom inspires peace among the tribe members, and her openness to other tribes has allowed for her people to increase their trading among the redwood tribes, providing pearls, seafood, salt, valuable oil, maps, and safe passage through the seas in exchange for hide, fur, lumber, and metal.
Town: The main town exists on an island just east of the Skull Island, where homes are built on the oceanside for easy access to fishing. A main building is used as a trade and spiritual center.
It is rumored that a grand underwater city houses their most sacred of texts and relics, though no outsider has ever seen them, and discussing such a place to foreigners is strictly forbidden.
People: The townspeople, about 50-80 in number, dress for an aquatic environment, using thin hides and fibers to make their clothing. Men and women rarely wear clothing on their upper body, as it is seen to be a hindrance when swimming. They tame a variety of creatures both on and off the island, however large dinosaurs are not favorable as it is difficult to sustain them in such a small environment. Aquatic creatures and flying creatures are preferable, and many tribe members have at least one animal ‘family member’ to suit their daily tasks. Last names do not exist, as the tribe considers themselves one family, and work together to raise their children in groups. Rather, they distinguish themselves from one another by their elemental spirit.
Most members of the tribe are thick or heavy-set, but not obese in any way as their active swimming lifestyle keeps them in shape. Their physique comes from both genetics and a diet of rich seafood, fruits and nuts, and fatty parts of deep-sea creatures. Deep tanned skin and dark hair with little to no body or facial hair is also the norm for their people.
Men and women have traditional roles, with men being hunters and defenders and women being caretakers and healers. Both are valued as equal and choosing to take the opposing gender’s role is considered an honorable action. Homosexuality is not uncommon in the village, and homosexual couples are referred to as "One-Spirits", something akin to soul mates. Sexuality itself is relaxed and free, and it is not strange to see a mother or father with children from more than one partner.
The Amagheyans are a communal group, and the raising of children is done by the entire tribe rather than the parents alone. Homes are viewed as sleeping quarters, and it's not strange to see another tribe member entering someone else's home when they are in need of rest - although many Amagheyans simply sleep outside where the night breeze keeps them comfortable.
OOC Information
To keep the tribe cohesive, please try to keep all IC names, buildings, and tames as close to the tribe norm as possible. Naming based on native american, pacific islander, and hawaiian words and names is preferred, or if you make one up, it should be similar sounding. Buildings should be limited to stone, wood, and thatch.
Any IC pets should be in line with what is and is not realistically supportable by an island habitat, as well as the basic description of the tribe. Below is a list of what creatures are best suited to such an environment. Keep in mind that those in italics are considered rare, and you should be very selective about taming one for IC use. They could be supported on the island, but they would be very rare to see. Ideally, you would only have a max of one or two of those rare creatures.
OOCly, you may tame whatever you like, but designate it as OOC by putting [OOC] in front of the name.
Creature List:
Herbivores
Ankylosaurus • Gallimimus • Pachy • Parasaur • Triceratops • Castoroides • Doedicurus • Gigantopithecus • Lystrosaurus • Megaloceros • Phiomia • Procoptodon • Mesopithecus • Carbonemys
Carnivores
Allosaurus • Carnotaurus • Compy • Dilophosaur • Oviraptor • Raptor • Dimetrodon • Beelzebufo • Sarco
